Unmasking the Quiet Divide: Anti-Black Racism in Morocco Must Be Confronted

Guest Commentary for InnerKwest – Agadir, Morocco

In the heart of North Africa lies Morocco—a nation often praised for its storied history, mosaic of cultures, and striking architectural grandeur. But beneath the vibrant souks and tourist-friendly medinas is a deeper, more troubling reality: the entrenched denial of anti-Black racism and the marginalization of Black Moroccans.

While Morocco champions its African identity in diplomatic forums and pan-African alliances, its societal fabric tells a different story—one threaded with silence, discomfort, and systemic exclusion.

A Past Not Yet Passed

Morocco’s legacy with slavery spans over a millennium. As a significant hub in the trans-Saharan slave trade, it became home to a sizeable Black population—descendants of enslaved Africans whose labor and presence helped shape the country. Yet, in modern-day Morocco, this historical truth is either diminished or ignored outright.

Terms like “Azzi” (a common racial slur), “Kahlouch” (blackie), and “Abd” (slave) are still thrown around with casual cruelty. These aren’t just relics of outdated language—they’re linguistic scars etched into everyday interactions. Yet, Moroccan society largely refuses to classify these terms as racism. Instead, many dismiss them as “nicknames” or “cultural quirks.”

This collective denial allows anti-Black discrimination to persist without consequence. It is not uncommon for Black Moroccans to face challenges in housing, employment, and even in simply claiming their identity. As one activist noted, “You’re either Moroccan or you’re Black—not both.”

Rising Voices in the Shadows

But change is stirring.

Grassroots campaigns such as Black Moroccans and The Mazeej Project are emerging from the silence. These initiatives are not just symbolic; they are urgent calls for recognition, justice, and reform. Their mission: to amplify Black voices, reclaim historical narratives, and dismantle the myth of a “colorblind Morocco.”

Fatima-Zahra Quatabou, a leading voice in this movement, argues that ignoring racism does not erase it—it enables it. She calls for public awareness campaigns, curriculum reform, and greater media representation of Black Moroccans—not as exotic backdrops, but as citizens and changemakers.

The Institutional Void

Despite the courage of these voices, the Moroccan state has largely remained unmoved. In 2012, authorities blocked the creation of an organization aimed at tackling racism against Black communities, claiming such discrimination does not exist in the kingdom. Legislative proposals meant to outlaw racial hate speech have repeatedly stalled in Parliament.

This silence at the top sends a clear message: Black Moroccans are visible, but not seen; present, but not acknowledged.

The Way Forward: Facing the Mirror

Morocco stands at a crossroads. It can continue to cloak its racial injustices in the language of national unity—or it can confront them with honesty and action. To move forward:

  • History must be taught, not hidden. The story of slavery and the Black Moroccan experience must be part of public education.
  • Laws must reflect lived realities. Morocco needs enforceable anti-discrimination legislation that protects Black citizens from racial abuse and systemic bias.
  • Representation must become reality. From media to politics to civic life, the presence of Black Moroccans must be normalized—not tokenized.
  • Denial must end. Until Morocco acknowledges the racism within, it cannot meaningfully address it.

Conclusion: Africa Must Begin at Home

As Morocco positions itself as a gateway between Europe and Africa, it must reckon with what it means to truly be African. That reckoning begins not with slogans or diplomatic speeches—but with the dignity and humanity of its own Black citizens.

The time for silence is over. Recognition is not enough. Reform is the only path forward.
