TargetFast Movement: Economic Activism for DEI Accountability

The TargetFast.org movement is a strategic initiative led by Pastor Dr. Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, in partnership with the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC). Launched on February 2, 2025, the movement calls for a 40-day economic “fast” from March 5 to April 17, 2025, urging Black consumers to halt all purchases from Target and divest any stock holdings in the company. This action is in response to Target’s rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, which were initially designed to support Black-owned businesses and promote workplace inclusivity. citeturn0search7

The movement aims to mobilize over 100,000 participants to demonstrate the significant impact of Black consumer spending. Black Americans contribute approximately $12 million daily to Target’s revenue. By redirecting this spending toward Black-owned businesses, the initiative seeks to hold corporations accountable for their commitments to DEI and to emphasize the economic power of the Black community.

Participants who pledge to join the fast will receive a 40-day prayer journal to support their spiritual journey during this period. Additionally, they will gain access to a digital business directory featuring over 300,000 Black-owned businesses, encouraging the redirection of funds to enterprises that reinvest in Black communities.

The movement’s demands to Target include:

  1. Honor the $2 Billion Pledge: Fulfill the commitment to invest $2 billion in Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025.
  2. Deposit $250 Million in Black-Owned Banks: Support community lending and financial growth by investing in Black-owned financial institutions.
  3. Restore DEI Initiatives: Reinstate and maintain comprehensive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs at all company levels.

This peaceful, strategic demonstration seeks to ensure that corporations prioritize diversity, equity, and justice, holding them accountable to their promises and fostering systemic change.InnerKwest®
