Beloved, there is a false faith at work in our land. It dresses itself in crosses, it waves open Bibles, it quotes fragments of holy words — but beneath its garments, it bows to another god. That god is not the Lord of Israel. That god is not the Christ who hung between thieves. That god is not the Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation. No, that false god is Whiteness itself — enthroned as an idol, worshiped as if it were salvation.
And when people put their trust in Whiteness rather than in God, what they are practicing is not Christianity. It is idolatry, plain and simple. It is a rival religion. It is a counterfeit gospel.
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Scripture
The Word has already told us what happens when idols are raised up.
- “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything … you shall not bow down to them or worship them.” (Exodus 20:3–5)
- Paul warns us: “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you … and are turning to a different gospel — which is really no gospel at all.” (Galatians 1:6–7)
- James declares: “My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism … have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” (James 2:1–4)
- And John tells us what is truly at stake: “As you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come.” (1 John 2:18)
The spirit of White Christian nationalism is not the Spirit of Christ. It is the spirit of antichrist. It is the worship of an idol called Whiteness.
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Turn: The Tactic of Diminishment
But why does this idol demand such fierce loyalty? Because idols always promise to protect their worshipers while oppressing everyone else. The idol of Whiteness works to diminish the vessels of God’s purpose.
Its playbook is intimidation. Its mission is diminishment. It targets its chosen victims with a single aim: to destroy their power, purpose, and prowess.
- Power — It whispers lies to strip away your authority, to make you question your voice, to silence your testimony.
- Purpose — It clouds your calling with doubt, convincing you that you were not chosen, that your destiny is too heavy, too much, too impossible.
- Prowess — It breaks your confidence, mocks your talent, limits your opportunities, and tells you to stay in your place.
But make no mistake: this is not just social prejudice. This is a principality and power. Paul said it best: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)
The idol of Whiteness is not only racism; it is a spiritual force designed to rob the children of God of their inheritance.
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Eight Witnesses: How the Idol Sat in the Sanctuary
This counterfeit religion leaves markers across history — artifacts that expose how Whiteness enthroned itself where only God belongs:
- White Christ / White Jesus — the Jewish Messiah recast as a blond European, divinity distorted into supremacy.
- White Evangelical / White Evangelicalism — a label meant for theology, but reshaped as a racial bloc, making one cultural experience the “norm.”
- White Church — as Dr. King decried, congregations defending segregation, more devoted to order than to justice.
- White Purity / White Christian Purity — morality fused with racial boundaries, exclusion disguised as holiness.
- White Man’s Burden — colonial conquest baptized as missionary duty, empire clothed as evangelism.
- White Christendom — European dominance proclaimed as orthodoxy itself, silencing indigenous voices of faith.
- White Moral Majority — a political movement that canonized cultural conservatism as God’s will.
- White Missionary Complex — the assumption that only Western Christians carried the true gospel, reinforcing inequity worldwide.
Each phrase is more than history. It is evidence. It shows how faith was displaced with Whiteness as god, and how the gospel was chained to the idol of racial supremacy.
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Lift: God’s Counter-Word
But God! Somebody say, But God!
- To the intimidation of the idol, God says: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid … for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
- To the diminishment of power, God says: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” (Acts 1:8)
- To the confusion of purpose, God says: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
- To the theft of prowess, God says: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
This is the Word of the Lord: intimidation will not stand, diminishment will not hold, and Whiteness will not have the last word.
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Land: The Call to Renounce Idols
Beloved, the time has come to name this false religion for what it is. White Christian nationalism is not Christianity — it is idolatry. It bows to Whiteness, not to Christ. It kneels before power, not the cross. It worships exclusion, not the God who said “whosoever will, let them come.”
And because it is idolatry, we must do what God’s people have always done: tear down the idol, scatter its ashes, and return to the living God.
So I call you today:
- Lay down the intimidation of the idol.
- Reclaim the power the Spirit gave you.
- Rediscover your purpose written in the Lamb’s book of life.
- Stand tall in the prowess God clothed you with before you ever knew your own name.
For there is only one faith, one Lord, one baptism, one God and Father of us all. And His name is not Whiteness. His name is Jesus Christ — the Lion of Judah, the Lamb who was slain, the King who is coming again.
Coda: The Aroma of Dark Principalities
Beloved, when we trace the arc from Europa—the Phoenician woman of myth whose name was given to a continent— to Europe, from Europe to Whiteness, from Whiteness to superiority, we are not just mapping history. We are discerning the aroma of dark principalities. For at every turn — in the Crusades, in conquest, in slavery, in racial hierarchies — unseen powers seized the moment, twisting geography into conquest, culture into exclusion, and identity into idolatry.
…when we trace the arc from Europa — the Phoenician woman of myth whose name was given to a continent — to Europe…
And make no mistake: this is what idolatry always does. It does not merely sit on a shelf as a lifeless statue. It breathes, it seduces, it demands worship. It sets itself against God, and it always comes for the same three things: your power, your purpose, your prowess.
In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician woman carried away by Zeus. Her name became attached to the western continent, and over centuries “Europe” shifted from a geographic marker to a cultural-religious identity. This mutation paved the way for its later racialization as “Whiteness.
But the gospel gives us discernment. The Spirit trains our senses to smell the foul odor of the counterfeit and to breathe in the aroma of Christ, which Paul says is “the fragrance of life” (2 Corinthians 2:15–16). Where idols demand fear, Christ offers freedom. Where principalities sow death, Christ gives resurrection life.
So let the church not be deceived. Let us name the idol for what it is, smell the stench for what it is, and declare with unshakable voice:
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Not Whiteness, but Christ!
Amen.
Some words aren’t optional — they’re essential. This sermonette unmasks the idol of Whiteness and deserves to be read, shared, and lived.
